International orchestra Britten Sinfonia have been working with children aged 5 and up from Swavesey Music School and students from Swavesey Village College to develop a performance of Terry Riley’s In C.

Composer Fraser Trainer and violinist Judith Kelly have been leading workshops with the young musicians since the beginning of term. Students have developed many new skills from learning how to play together, developing listening skills and an understanding of how a piece is composed.

The piece was performed in front of renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie as part of the opening celebration of the new hall.

In C is often cited as one of the first minimalist compositions and allows the musicians to direct the performance themselves.

The project has been generously supported by Orchestra’s Live with EMI Music and Sound Foundation, John Lewis Cambridgeshire Music Awards and stART.

Lead artist Jo Chapman is inviting local people to create a section for a banner like art-work, which will wrap around the meadows and will be used as inspiration for her final piece. You can use fabric paints, permanent markers or stitching to create a section or come along to one of the free art events. For more information see the website http://melbourn.org.uk/publicart

If you care about the arts, please spare the 30 seconds it takes to sign up. You’ll be in good company!
