Swavesey Screen: The Artist

Wednesday 18th July

It’s the late 1920s in Hollywood and handsome George Valentin is a silent movie idol. During the premiere of his latest film, Valentin meets Peppy Miller, a star-struck extra and aspiring actress. The two are attracted to each other and Peppy is given a small dancing role in his next picture. As their romance progresses, Valentin’s producer has to cope with a love-struck star who is distracted on the set, Peppy’s career begins to take off, and Valentin fears that a new fad in the movie business–talkies–will ruin him.

Join Rock dons Fil and Nick for four days of practical workshops, guidance from music professionals on performing, putting on gigs & getting the right equipment and the opportunity to perform at the Summer Rock Out.

Professional artists lead five days of making, turning everyday craft on it’s head! Create knitted environments, make ‘fabric’ out of duct tape, cling film and old plastic bottles and much more!

Changing Woodland, Meldreth

On Saturday 31^st March a family treasure hunt took place around Melwood, Meldreth with sculptures of animals made by Melbourn Village College students and poems by children from Meldreth primary school on the theme of how climate change effects woodland. This was followed by a writing workshop at the Tavern Gallery run by Tavern Gallery Writers. Things To Do from the BBC

Things To Do bbc.co.uk/thingstodo lets people find free and non-commercial activities by the BBC and their partners connected to BBC TV, Radio & Campaigns. Visitors to the website can simply enter a postcode and find hundreds of activities going on in their area.

They welcome partners who run on a not-for-profit basis or are a public service organisation to upload their activities and get them publicised for free. If your organisation offers exciting activities that engage children, families and individuals to participate in activities then share them with Things To Do and gain the benefits of publicity through this free BBC Knowledge & Learning website. They want to be sure that partners’ benefit from a long-term partnership with Things To Do.

They promote activities run by not-profit organisations across bbc.co.uk as well as getting regular promotions for our site on BBC programmes, channel sites as well as BBC Homepage which attracts over 1 million unique users a day. They have also just launched a widget on all the regional news pages which is sending plenty of traffic to the site to discover the activities on offer.

All the Bells – Ring a bell for Martin Creed in South Cambridgeshire

Take part in one of Turner Prize winner Martin Creeds biggest ever works ‘All the Bells’ by ringing a bell between 8.00am and 8.03am on the morning of Friday 27 July. Bells of all shapes and sizes are welcome – hand bells, door bells, bicycle bells, church bells, town hall bells, sleigh bells, cow bells, school bells, last orders bells, dinner bells – where there is a bell, Martin Creed would like someone to ring it! SC3 – great gigs outside the city

Do you live or work in South Cambs?
Are you interested in music, comedy and theatre?

If so you’ll be interested in the new SC3 programme that is bringing great gigs to venues in South Cambridgeshire. Kicking off the new programme in November is a mini tour by band competition winners The Willows who are rising stars on the folk scene. The Willows bring haunting vocals, and elements of folk and roots music together with a distinctly catchy, pop-infused and unmistakably beautiful sound. Their mature melodies are reminiscent of Laura Marling’s earlier tracks, with a sound altogether darker and richer.

Cambourne Bloco

The Cambourne Bloco is beginning to prepare for a full summer of shows and parades across south Cambridgeshire. A bloco is a collective of samba drums, brass section and colourful costumed dancers. The Cambourne Bloco is part of a national Cultural Olympiad project called Imagination Our Nation which has a narrative arch that builds to 2012 featuring lots of puppet from the planet imagination. Sawston film shortlisted for First Light Award

Young people from Sawston Village College’s Cinema Club are delighted to have had one of their films shortlisted in the animation category of the prestigious First Light Awards. The film, which was made by eight members of the group, tells the story of a day in the life of Luke. It’s a day with some unexpected twists and has a surprise in store at the end. EMI Music Sound Foundation were so impressed by the project that it has been featured on their newly relaunched website .

EMI Music Sound Foundation is an independent music education charity, established in 1997 to celebrate the centenary of EMI Records and to improve young peoples’ access to music education in the UK & Ireland.
